The inventors of Sweetgrass Gemstones

Southerners Vicki and Van moved to Charleston in 1984 and immediately became fascinated in the history and culture of the Low Country.  They came to appreciate the heritage of sweetgrass and the benefits that it brought to the former plantation slaves.  They collected baskets of all shapes and kinds. Vicki even took basket weaving classes to make her own sweetgrass baskets which they still use.
Van came up with the idea to take the sweetgrass (Muhlenbergia filipis) which contained substantial natural resins and put it under tremendous pressure and heat to transform it into gemstones that Vicki fashions into jewelry.
